Building a Lasting Legacy: How to Lead with Purpose and Create Impact
Nqobile MthembuShare
When I started The Madam’s Table, it wasn’t just about empowering women in the present—it was about creating a platform that would leave a lasting legacy. Legacy is not just about what we achieve during our lifetime, but about the impact we leave behind for future generations. It’s the ripple effect of leadership.

In “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek, Sinek teaches us that those who leave the greatest legacies are those who lead with a clear sense of purpose. This deeply resonated with me as I began to build my businesses and this platform. I wanted to ensure that my work was not just about success in the moment, but about creating lasting change.
Joseph was a legacy builder because his actions had an enduring impact on future generations. Through his wisdom, leadership, and unwavering faith, Joseph not only saved Egypt and surrounding nations from famine but also secured a future for his family and the Israelites. His legacy was so profound that hundreds of years later, when the Israelites were freed from captivity in Egypt, they honoured his memory by fulfilling their promise to carry his bones with them to the Promised Land. This lasting impact illustrates the power of a true legacy—one that not only transforms the present but continues to shape the future, influencing generations long after we’re gone.
The actions we take today—whether through leadership, wisdom, or empowering others—can leave a lasting mark on those around us. Just as Joseph’s legacy influenced an entire nation, our efforts to break cycles, create opportunities, and empower others will echo for generations, leaving an imprint that far outlives us.
True legacy building is about shaping a future that honours the past while creating new possibilities for those who come after us.
1. Lead with Purpose
Legacy begins with knowing your why. For me, "My purpose in life is to break generational cycles of poverty and lack, paving the way to financial freedom for my children and future generations." By doing so, I aim to create a legacy of empowerment, not only within my family but by uplifting and impacting those around me—helping them realise their own potential for growth and success. Through financial education, mentorship, and meaningful leadership, I am committed to creating opportunities that foster lasting change, transforming lives and communities for generations to come." .Your legacy will be defined by how well you live out your purpose, so it’s crucial to align every decision and action with that deeper meaning.
2. Empower the Next Generation
Building a legacy isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about lifting others as you climb. In “The Mentor Leader” by Tony Dungy, Dungy emphasises that true leaders build others up. Mentorship is a powerful way to pass on the knowledge and wisdom you’ve gained, ensuring that your legacy continues through the next generation of women leaders.
3. Think Long-Term
When I think about the businesses I’ve built, I don’t measure their success by short-term gains. I think about the long-term impact—on my family, my community, on the families of my employees, and on the industry as a whole. Legacy is about building sustainable impact, and that means thinking beyond immediate wins to how your work will endure in order to leave a mark that will last long after your life is over.
Final thought: Legacy is not just what you accomplish for yourself—it’s what you leave behind for others. Lead with purpose, empower those around you, and think long-term. That’s how you build a legacy that stands the test of time.
